Democrat judge upholds Islamic ban on Pride flags

A Clinton-appointed judge has upheld a ban on Pride flags by the Muslim-majority city of Hamtramck, Michigan.
In 2023, the Hamtramck City Council voted to ban all flags except for the American flag, the Michigan flag, and flags representing “the international character” of residents. In Hamtramck, this could include the Yemeni, Bangladeshi, or other Islamic national flags. The ban, which only applies to public property, came after two former city officials had flown the Pride flag, which the all-Muslim city council said clashed with their Islamic faith.
The two former officials sued the city, claiming the ban violated the First Amendment right to free speech. But on September 8th, Judge David Lawson upheld the city council’s decision because it banned all private flags, not only the Pride flag.
“Hamtramck’s refusal to display the Gay Pride flag did not violate the Constitution,” the judge said.
No outrage from the Left?
The decision seemed to attract little outrage from Leftists.
“It’s 2025, I’m so over anyone having issues with the LGBTQ+ community, for religious reasons or whatever else. Grow up,” wrote a user in Reddit’s r/AskaLiberal community in response to the ruling.
But bans on Pride flags passed by Christian or Mormon Americans have triggered a vastly different reaction from liberals. In March, for example, Utah became the first state to ban Pride flags on government buildings by prohibiting all political flags, including Make America Great Again flags.
Leftists accused the Republican-controlled state legislature of trying to “erase LGBTQ+ expression.” For months after the bill passed, local leaders in liberal Salt Lake City organized demonstrations, which included lighting the City-County Building in rainbow lights to protest the law. Republican Governor Spencer Cox made it clear that he sympathized with the LGBTQ+ activists.
The Left’s own doing
It was Leftists who cheered the Islamic takeover of Hamtramck a decade ago.
“In 2015, many liberal residents in Hamtramck, Michigan, celebrated as their city attracted international attention for becoming the first in the United States to elect a Muslim-majority city council,” reported The Guardian.
But when the city council voted to ban Pride flags in 2023, some of those Leftists felt betrayed by the Islamism they had spent years supporting. Former Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski said she felt a “sense of betrayal.”
“We supported you when you were threatened, and now our rights are threatened, and you’re the one doing the threatening,” she said.
