NYC poised to elect Muslim socialist mayor

New York City is poised to elect Muslim socialist Zohran Mamdani as its next mayor.
The Uganda-born Mamdani is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a movement boasting over 90,000 members, including far-Left members of Congress like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).
Recent polls show Mamdani pulling ahead of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the mayoral race after an endorsement by AOC, making him the likely victor of the Democratic primary on June 24th. Both Democrats are running against incumbent Eric Adams, who is campaigning as an independent.
Wealth distribution and government-owned grocery stores
Like his fellow DSA members, Mamdani believes “capitalism is theft.” He has emphasized his Muslim faith and repeatedly accused his opponents of “Islamophobia.” He has expressed hostility towards Israel and opposes its right to exist as a Jewish state. His socialist policies include increasing taxes on the wealthy, freezing rent prices, universal childcare, and establishing government-owned grocery stores.
“As Mayor, Zohran will create a network of city-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices low, not making a profit,” Mamdani’s campaign website says. “Without having to pay rent or property taxes, they will reduce overhead and pass on savings to shoppers. They will buy and sell at wholesale prices, centralize warehousing and distribution, and partner with local neighborhoods on products and sourcing. With New York City already spending millions of dollars to subsidize private grocery store operators (which are not even required to take SNAP/WIC!), we should redirect public money to a real ‘public option.’”
According to survey results reported in the Daily Wire last week, Mamdani is polling at 35% while Cuomo is polling at 31%. The Cuomo campaign has disputed the results, saying its own internal polling shows the former governor ahead of Mamdani.
Whoever wins the Democratic primary is likely to win the mayoral price in the deep blue City of New York.
