LA County Sheriff apologizes for pro-Iran post

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has apologized for sending condolences to Iran after what it described as President Trump’s “tragic” strikes on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facilities.

“Our hearts go out to the victims and families impacted by the recent bombings in Iran. While this tragic event occurred overseas, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is closely monitoring the situation alongside our local, state, and federal partners,” the department tweeted this week after the US hit several Iranian nuclear plants.

After public backlash, the Sheriff’s Department edited the post. It removed the first sentence so that the tweet began: “The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is closely monitoring the situation alongside our local, state, and federal partners.”

The law enforcement agency then issued an apology, promising a full review.

“We are issuing this statement to formally apologize for an offensive and inappropriate social media post recently posted on our Department social media platforms regarding the ongoing conflict in Iran,” it said in a press release. “This post was unacceptable, made in error, and does not reflect the views of Sheriff Robert G. Luna or the Department. As a law enforcement agency, we do not comment on foreign policy or military matters. Our mission remains solely focused on protecting public safety and serving our diverse communities.”

“We have updated our social media post and have launched an internal review to determine how it was created and published,” the department added.

Western liberals defend Iran’s regime

The post came as many on the Left expressed sympathy with Iran following Trump’s strikes. Shortly after news broke of the US bombings, demonstrators took to the streets in downtown Los Angeles with signs reading “Hands Off Iran” and waving Palestinian flags.

“The people of Los Angeles are taking to the streets in Downtown to demand an end to the war on Iran, on our migrants, and on Gaza!” read an Instagram post from the protest’s organizers. “We are here alongside over 30 organizations to show the world that LA rejects U.S. military intervention, and to make it clear that our movements will only continue to grow and strengthen and unite in confrontation of Zionism and U.S. imperialism. Arms embargo now! No war! No deportations! No occupation!”

Similar demonstrations began outside the White House, where protestors waved Iranian flags, called for a global intifada, and chanted "Iran is a lion, and you are a mouse."

Iranian expatriates have expressed outrage at the outpouring of support for Iran’s oppressive Islamic regime.
